sometimes and always.

Rarely do I participate in link-ups, but I thought I'd join in on this creative one today. Thanks for hosting it, Mackey Madness!

Sometimes: I get frustrated with coaching basketball and how much time and effort it takes, especially when we lose frequently.

Always: I remind myself what a privilege it is to coach such a great group of girls and how I have the opportunity to affect their lives in a positive way.

Sometimes: I go to the grocery store to get a couple of items.

Always: I purchase extra cheddar Goldfish.

Sometimes: I want to delete Facebook because I hardly use it anymore and I'm tired of it. (Except for my blog facebook!)

Always: I keep it so I can get event invites and such.

Sometimes: I really really really really don't want to clean.

Always: I put on Disney music and it makes the cleaning more cheerful. :)

Sometimes: I want to be in complete control of my future.

Always: I'm thankful that God does the planning and not me, because I can be really dumb.

Sometimes: I want to learn how to sew.

Always: I have no idea where to start.

Sometimes: I research what's going on in politics to be an educated voter.

Always: It frustrates me and I realize how fallen our world is.

I barely made it in time for InstaFriday. This week has FLOWN by. Lots of church activities, basketball, cleaning, and having people over - which has been awesome.

These pics are gonna be oh so random.

Here's one of my family's cats. This one is Floyd. This other one is Pink. They are cute and cuddly and I love them.

This is what Jordan and I do when we get to relax. Squeezing in some reading and Call of Duty.

Speaking of reading, tonight I starting re-reading this amazing series. It's crazy how fast these have gotten insanely popular. I read them last summer, but I finished them in a few days. So now I'm reading them more slowly before the movie comes out. March 23rd! Can't wait!

Last weekend Jordan and I ate at this scrumptious place. Which is where we had our first date. :) And we got the same thing as we did on that April day in 2010. Ahh, memories...

I remember sitting there thinking about how handsome he was and how kind he was to open my door and how I wish I could just know everything about him and be with him already. But then I also remember thinking how I loved that feeling of not knowing everything about him, and how if I was eventually supposed to then it would be a beautiful process. I had all kinds of crazy feelings running through me on that day, haha. It didn't take me long to fall for him...

Anyway, sorry, I'm snapping back to reality. I love their mac and cheese with chicken. It is seriously SO good.

That's all for this week...I need to take more pics! Next week I'll be sure to have more. :)

encouraging strangers in Starbucks.

So I'm sitting in Starbucks. (No - not for coffee. You know I don't like coffee. But I sure do love hot chocolate.)

from thenextweb.com

The girl beside me is reading her Bible. She's been reading it for a good 20 minutes now. Very cool.

So the baristo (Is that what you say when it's a guy? I don't know but he's a guy working at Starbucks so yeah) leans over the counter and tries to get her attention. She doesn't hear him so I tell her that he wants to tell her something.

When she looks up he says,
"It's such an encouragement for me to see you reading the Word. Thank you for doing that. That's awesome."

She smiles and says thanks and then thanks me for getting her attention.

Um...holy upliftnedness.

Basically this is what happened:

Girl reading Bible --> Guy encouraged --> Tells her --> Girl encouraged --> I witness all this --> I'm encouraged.

Why don't we do this more?? It literally took 5 seconds for all three of us to be encouraged. We are strangers. But it doesn't matter. We are brothers and sisters in Christ!

It's little moments like that when I think to myself, "Wow, I love being a part of the body of Christ."

So this is what I learned tonight at Starbucks:

1. Reading God's Word is amazing and ALWAYS worth my time. It can encourage others too.
2. When I see other people in the Word, or helping others, or anything positive really - why not tell them thank you? Why not mention that they inspire me? I talk about negative stuff way too much - I should be focused on encouraging others!
3. The first step of encouragement is being observant. When I'm in my selfish little bubble and oblivious to the world around me, I'm not gonna be very uplifting.
4. Life is way too short to not be kind to people. Really, genuinely kind - overflowing with the love of Christ. No matter where I am. Or if I'm in a hurry or stressed out or worried or anything else that could hinder me.

Praise the Lord for the encouragement of strangers!

Have you been uplifted by a stranger recently?

What have I done??

Today I spent some time with my wonderful mother.

Yeah. That beautiful lady.

Well....I introduced her to Pinterest

Gave her the full tutorial, made her profile, got her the Pin It button, everything.

Tonight I got on the computer to check email and such.

To find that she has pinned like 283 things.

Not really but it was a lot.

What have I done??

Just kidding, Mom. I'm gonna love looking at your pins.

But if Twitter is next....I'm not going there. No way.

Love you. :)

InstaFriday: Vintage Decorations!

InstaFriday: Decorations

I've gotten a few new little items from The Nest - my favorite vintage and shabby chic store in downtown Burlington - thanks to Granma and Grandaddy Shelley! They gave me a gift certificate for Christmas. :)

I collect antique Ball mason jars and I LOVE the blue ones.

This is on a shelf in our kitchen nook.

Since the Christmas decorations are gone (sad!) - I put together a new coffee table arrangement. That little bucket can hold our remotes/a game controller.

I am SO GLAD I bought that tray from The Nest. I couldn't decide how I would use it, but the grays and blues on it look perfect in our living room.

Can you tell I love using old Readers Digest books? (Inherited that love from my favorite decorator - my mother!)

The patterns on them are so lovely - and I've actually read out of some of them too. For one or two dollars a piece at antique stores, they're hard to beat.

This chalkboard also came from The Nest. I was going to make one, but this was the perfect size I was looking for with just the right color gray for the frame. And I couldn't make one that size for less than $12!

That verse always reminds me of God's amazing peace. Why do I worry about the future? The Lord of all creation has it under control.

I tend to freak out about things (just ask Jordan!), so I knew this would be an excellent verse displayed for me to see every day.

So thankful for that promise - I hope it can encourage you today as well.

tagged again! my answers...

The lovely Kim at Grin and "Barrett" tagged me!

I won't waste your time with new facts about myself and questions, since I've already done that here, but I'm going to answer her questions of course.

By the way, check out Kim's blog. She is a sister in Christ and has been a sweet inspiration for me since high school! She and her husband are adorable.

Okay so here are Kim's questions for me.

1. What is your favorite game to play?
Jordan and I are obsessed with board games/card games. He got a new one called Ticket to Ride for Christmas which is quite fun. I love Monopoly Deal but he doesn't like it so much. (It stresses him out, haha.)

from funagain.com

2. What is something you do in your spare time just for yourself?
Oh yeah and blog. :)

3. What is the most important trait to have in a marriage or relationship?
Being Christ-centered is definitely most important! The other important traits will stem from that - such as selflessness, respect, honesty, trust, etc.

4. Where is your favorite vacation spot?
North Myrtle Beach! I've been there every year of my life.

5. What is your favorite meal?
This is tough, but probably hibachi style chicken with rice, noodles, some veggies, and of course the white sauce.

6. What is your favorite Bible verse?
I have a lot of favorites, but since I was little I've always loved Philippians 4:7:
"And the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."

7. If you could visit one state/city in the USA what would it be?
I want to go to Alaska someday! We really want to visit them all, though.

8. What is the best surprise you ever received?
Definitely Jordan's proposal! Biggest shock of my life and by far one of the best moments. :)

9. What is your favorite weekend activity?
Getting together with friends/family and having a board game/movie night! I love having people over and just hanging out. While also spending time with my man.
10. What are you afraid of?
I talked about some of my fears a while back, but right now I'm afraid the squirrel that's been hanging out in our ceiling is going to somehow get in our home someday. I keep picturing him popping out of the fireplace and me going ballistic.

11. What do you hope 2012 has in store?
More basketball wins, ice cream, lots of memorable times, and opportunities to glorify Christ every day!

Thanks for the tag, Kim!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

OH and by the way, there is an amazingly wonderful giveaway happening over at Allison's blog that involves Erin Condren! I actually don't want you to enter so I have a better chance to win. :) Haha but yeah...go enter and check out her blog!

hot rollers: using steam and a cool trick!

I'm here to tell you about my new hot rollers. I think they're great, and I recommend them, but you never know with different hair types. So I can't guarantee anything. That's my disclaimer. Also, I'm not getting paid to talk about this. (I wish!)

With that said, this has turned out to be an excellent Christmas present. (That I asked for. No, Jordan did not pick these out himself haha. That would be...weird.) I can pop these babies into my hair in a jiffy and do my makeup while I let them set. Quite easy.

They are Caruso Professional Steam Hairsetters.

You can get different variations and sizes, but here's a link to some on Amazon.

They're steam rollers, so they're different than normal hot rollers. There's a little contraption that you fill with water which produces steam when it heats up. You put a roller on the contraption for a few seconds and it gets hot and moisturized, which is supposed to be better for your hair than normal rollers. Also I don't burn my little fingers when I put them in. Pretty cool.

Round 1

Sooooo attractive, right? Nothing says, "Good morning, husband, I'm your lovely wife" like a bunch of rollers in your hair.

The result...

Being so fierce in our bathroom.

Looks like they worked well, doesn't it?

They did, but....

What's up with some of those ends?? They're all crazy looking! This has always happened to me with rollers. It's frustrating because those kind of ends are hard to fix.

I then watched this amazing video by Wendy's Look Book which showed me how to fix those crazy ends with a cool toilet paper trick! She is so cute. And she does this in her car? Ha! I would fail miserably in my car.

If you didn't watch it, she shows you how to wrap a piece of toilet paper around your ends before you put the roller in so they will be secure and turn out nice and smooth. I wouldn't suggest doing this with normal rollers because it could be possible that your head catches on fire. But with steam rollers it will work wonders. Really. I'll show you.

Round 2

It's hard to look like a g with rollers in. But I tried.

I did like Wendy said and used the toilet paper on my ends. And this is what happened.

Holy curl. I was alarmed because I foresaw a Shirley Temple look in my future.

But after I took out all of the rollers and ran my fingers through the curls, they relaxed and turned out much better! No crazy weird ends.

So there you have it! Love the rollers, love the cool toilet paper trick.

Love saving time on my hair and not wearing it the same every single day. :)

Happy Monday!

so much bigger than football.

Does it matter who won the football games tonight? Or if the Broncos won in overtime last week? Or who will win the Super Bowl? Does it really matter?

From an eternal perspective, no.

From an eternal perspective, what matters is that God is glorified.

If football gets people talking about the gospel, then that matters. Not the football games or the players themselves - but the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

It doesn't matter who you are. We are all nothing without Christ.

Tim Tebow's platform has gone from the Gators to college football fans to Broncos fans to all of the sudden the WORLD.

What is my platform right now?
My family and friends? My basketball team? Raleigh, NC? This little blog?

Whatever my platform is - I need to be glorifying God. Through good times, bad times, confusing times, ALL times. It is truly the only thing that really matters.

Did anyone else see this commercial tonight?

THAT is what matters.

a bunch of randomness and goal updates.

My thoughts are SO all over the place lately so this is gonna be random.

My amazing husband won his fantasy football league which meant we got a bunch of extra ca$h moneyyy. He treated himself to a PS3 and Call of Duty so he can play with his friends. This might sound like a negative thing to some women, but I've been loving it. He's sitting beside me playing his game and I'm on the computer. We're hanging out without doing the exact same thing. And I think it is sooo cute when he gets really into it. :) He even got me a game too! It's called Little Big Planet. I like it but haven't played it that much. I'm so used to my Wii!

The main character is adorable. You can dress it up however you want. This is what it looks like without any clothes, haha.

My basketball team won again yesterday! YESSSSSS. You can call us butter because we're on a rolllllll.

There are still some Christmas decorations I haven't put away. And there are some that I'm claiming are "winter" decorations so I'm leaving them up. January can't take the jollyness from my home!

I'm seriously loving my blogger friends. Y'all inspire me daily.

Did you know that Blogger now has threaded commenting? So you can comment on a comment! Sweet.

I'm back from my Words With Friends break. It had been too long.

Okay so how have I been doing on my goals since it's been all of 2 weeks? (not even)

Some 2012 goals updates:

  • I went to the outlets with my friend and bought no clothes. Since there was a Loft outlet it definitely took some restraint...
  • I got the My Fitness Pal app today to help me log my workouts and meals. Pretty cool. Except for today it said I didn't get enough calories. But I'm pretty sure if it knew I ate Taco Bell last night it'd think differently...
  • Having my Bible reading and prayer time in the morning is fantastic.
  • As some of you may know from my late night emails, I haven't been asleep by 11. But we've been going to bed earlier!
  • I used a new recipe today and it was successful. :)
  • I've been sticking to my cleaning schedule and it is GREAT. Speaking of that...

Coming soon on the blog:
  • My cleaning schedule
  • My planner and organization notebook
  • The best hot rollers in my opinion
  • My skincare routine
  • More "Real Housewives of the Blog World"
  • More wedding advice
  • Book reviews
  • A giveaway!
I'm off to watch The Biggest Loser! By the way, I went to high school with a guy named Daniel who was on The Biggest Loser twice and met his fiance on there - he is AWESOME. Check out his website especially if you need some fitness motivation!

i was tagged!

I was tagged by Meghan at Shine On in a fun little blog game!

Tag! You're it!

The Rules
1. You must post the rules.
2. Post eleven fun facts about yourself on the blog post.
3. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post, and then create eleven new questions to ask the people you've tagged.
4. Tag eleven people and link them on your post
5. Let them know you've tagged them!

Facts About Me!

1. I am extremely double-jointed. Especially my elbows and fingers. This has always fascinated people...except for photographers. When I was on Storm Squad and had to have pictures taken, the photographer would always tell me to fix my arms so they didn't look broken.

2. I am the proud godmother of this little pup named Finley.

3. I've worn a beard for an extensive amount of time in front of 19,000 people. (For the playoffs, of course!)

4. I've been in the pants of Jared from the Subway commercials. (That sounds so weird. Explanation: I had to stand in them at the State Fair with a couple of other girls. Jared was a nice guy.)

5. I've had the same best friend since I was 11. We're both named Ashley/Ashlee.

6. This is my 6th year coaching basketball. I get intense.

7. I could eat chocolate ice cream with every meal, at any time of day.

8. I can sing every song from every High School Musical. Don't judge.

9. My last name is my mom's first name.

10. My favorite character in The Hunger Games is Finnick Odair. Probably because I love complicated characters who aren't always what they seem.

11. One of my favorite things about my wedding was that my mom gave me the veil that she wore in her wedding. It was so special to be able to wear it 28 years after her and know that their marriage is still going strong. It also worked out that it had aged to match the color of my dress perfectly. :)

Questions from Meghan
{one} what are you most looking forward to in 2012?
Our 1st anniversary coming up in March. :) Summer, just because I love it and also I got a super nice body board for Christmas from my man. Can't wait to use it! Oh and one of my best friends is getting married in August - all of the festivities involving that are gonna be awesome.

{two} what is the first thing you notice about people?
Their demeanor - if they're quiet, cheerful, serious, outgoing, etc.

{three} where is the furthest you've ever traveled from home?
Hawaii! The most spur-of-the-moment, amazing, surprise trip ever! And I loved it. Except for the ridiculously long plane rides and the loss of my husband's wedding ring.

{four} what's your favorite sport and why?
Oh man. This is a hard question for me because I love sports so much. Although basketball is my favorite sport to play and coach, and hockey holds a special place in my heart - baseball is my favorite sport in general. I've loved it my entire life and am utterly devoted to my Red Sox.

{five} what's the numero uno most-played song on your ipod?
Well, I can't just look that up because I don't have iTunes on my computer, haha. I know, weird. My iPod doesn't have a home. But I bet that it's either a Coldplay song like Green Eyes or The Scientist, or Magic by BOB since that was our surprise dance song for the wedding and I listened to it a LOT when we were choreographing it and practicing!

{six} what's your least favorite chore?
Absolutely doing the dishes. Even if it's just scraping them off, rinsing, and putting them in the dishwasher. I strongly dislike it.

{seven} what is one of your favorite quotes?
This quote was used in church yesterday and it always convicts me:
"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose."
- Jim Elliot

{eight} coke or pepsi?
Neither, but I do like Cherry Coke Zero and Diet Wild Cherry Pepsi. I love it when drink machines have Diet Coke and Cherry Coke and I can mix them. So good.

{nine} if you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be?
I'm just gonna go with what first popped into my head: Jesus walking on water and Peter walking out to meet Him. When I was little I would always ask my Dad to tell me that story. It's always intrigued me and I think it's an amazing picture of the Christian journey - failures and all.

{ten} if you could be any fictional character, who would it be?
This is a tie between Princess Leia from Star Wars and Princess Jasmine from Aladdin. I cannot choose between my favorite princesses.

{eleven} what do you miss most about being a kid?
Playing in the woods with my brother. We were so blessed to have places to build forts, climb trees, and have nerf gun fights. Now the town of Cary has taken over those woods, but I think about it every time I drive through where we used to live.

Justin Bieber, basketball, Joshua, and Caleb.

Wondering how those people tie in with basketball? Well, wonder no longer because you're about to get told.

Wait. That's not what I meant. That sounds completely threatening. You're not about to get told. We're not about to have a street fight. I'm just going to simply tell you. (Glad I caught that. It was about to get crazy up in hurr.)

Yesterday I had an away game with my JV girls basketball team. We loaded up the bus and headed out to play, only to get there and find out our game was going to be an hour later than we thought. Grrr. Good thing I had my Kindle. :)

So while we were sitting there waiting, the girls talked to some of their friends who go to the school we were playing. Apparently their friends were talking about how good their JV girls are and that they hadn't lost a game.

Have I mentioned that we hadn't won a game? Yeah, I guess that's kinda important to mention. We've lost two games by 2 points, and one game by 1, but still hadn't gotten that W.

So as you can imagine, the girls were a litttttle intimidated by this. Then they saw their opponents walking around. They were tall. They looked strong. Oh dear.

When I met them in the locker room after they had gotten ready, they were talking about this situation. Saying things that didn't sound very hopeful. Although in my mind I was thinking the same things, I put a quick stop to all of our thinking by saying that we did NOT need to go into the game with that attitude.

This was when one of my girls chimed in and said, "This is just like the land of Canaan.

Some of the other girls just stared at her, confused.

"You know, when the group of Israelites went to check out the land of Canaan before they were going to take it over, and they thought the people looked too intimidating and big. They didn't want to do it anymore and they were scared. Except for Joshua and Caleb."

Okay, let me pause right here and say that I normally do a devotion before games, but this girl had just straight up done a devotion that directly applied to our situation without even meaning to. Wow. I was stunned. This is a girl who is around 15 years old.

This inspired me to no end. If only I could always have a heart like that, an attitude that looks at situation and immediately applies what I know from Scripture to it. God gives us so many amazing examples in the Bible of people who went through trials. They were REAL people, not just stories. It's awesome that we can relate to them!

As you may know, Joshua and Caleb were the only Israelites who had faith that God would help them defeat the big guys. The other Israelites almost STONED them for being so optimistic. But they knew the Lord would help them. Because of this, they were the only ones who were able to enter the Promised Land. Yeah...their attitudes paid off.

So there we were, one second complaining about how hard the game could be, and the next second dwelling on the fact that with God, anything is possible.

And you know what we did? We went out there and completely ran the floor. I spent the entire game in amazement. Our first win was against a team who hadn't lost. We scored 43 points. To put that into perspective, our highest scoring game thus far had been 19 points. Yeah. Crazy awesome.

I was so proud of them. Yes, for winning and playing ridiculously great, but most of all for their attitude shift before the game. That's exactly what believers are supposed to do - encourage each other and lift each other up with God's promises and with Scripture. In EVERY situation.

How does J. Biebz fit into this? Well for some reason when I was picturing Joshua and Caleb having faith that went against what everyone else was saying, this song immediately popped into my head.

Thanks, Justin. If they ever make a movie about Joshua and Caleb, you could be on the soundtrack.

my 2012 goals.

Well Happy New Year, people. I guess we should enjoy this one since the world is going to end. (Kidding. I mean maybe not kidding, because no one knows when the Lord will come back. Whatever. You know know what I mean.)

I was meaning to post this Sunday or yesterday....but today will have to do. Yay for the first Tuesday of the year!

The other day I talked about setting goals over at Lauren's blog. I discussed how before I made resolutions goals I made categories to help prioritize things and organize everything in my head.

So today I'll share some of them. Not all of them...because some of them are kinda personal and you would never want to know them. But some.

Honestly, there's only one goal that truly matters. I really love how Lecrae put it on Twitter:

"My only resolution is having deeper intimacy with Jesus. All other goals/resolutions flow from there."

That is so true.

And Faith is definitely my #1, all encompassing category for goals. If that's not my first priority, then I've got it all wrong. But I did go a bit further than that with my planning. Here they are.

2012 Goals

1. Faith
Have my daily Bible reading and prayer time every morning. I tried to do this at night for a while, but it's just better for me in the morning. I am reminded of it throughout the day and I'm not forgetting it and falling asleep right afterward.

Have my Bible study book time each night. I have multiple studies that I'm doing right now, and I'm going to focus on those before I go to bed.

Memorize more Scripture.

2. Ministry
Focus on Jordan as my #1 ministry.

Intentionally try to bless someone (other than Jordan) each day.

Continue to make sharing the gospel with strangers a normal thing.

Use the blog as a ministry - not just a creative outlet.

3. Relationships
Consciously put Jordan's needs above my own.

Make it a habit to think about how I can respect Jordan before I react.

Call a friend/family member to talk at least once a week. This may sound dumb, but I've never been a phone person and I need to become one to keep up with my friends now that we're spread out!

Set apart time to return messages/emails each day. I am the worst at this. The absolute worst. As I talked about with my internet laundry

4. Home
Make a cleaning schedule and stick to it. I'll show you my schedule soon. :)

De-clutter to make more space.

Put away all clothes each day.

5. Health
Use meal planner.

Grocery shop once a week the day that I plan meals.

Cook a new meal once a week. This could be from my cookbooks or the internet.

Make workout schedule and follow it. (I'm already so sore from this! I guess that's a good thing.)

Go to bed earlier. 11:00 is the goal - the ASLEEP goal. Not the get in bed and do our devotions together and talk about everything and then read some more goal. The sleeping goal.

6. Finance
Do the budget with Jordan at the beginning of every month.

Use the cash system.

Start using coupons.

Do not buy any clothes in 2012. This doesn't seem that bad to me but most people have been shocked when I've told them this. I guess it's because a lot of people like shopping, but I don't like shopping unless it's to spend time with my mom or a friend. I'm horrible at making decisions when shopping so usually I leave with nothing. (Unless I'm at Target. But not with clothes.)

Of course if for some reason I gain a ridiculous amount of weight, or a fire burned down our apartment, or something crazy happened I'd have to get clothes, but hopefully that won't be the case. I don't claim to know God's plans so I can't say that there is absolutely no way I could need to buy new clothes. But unless there is some specific need because of something like that, I won't buy any.

7. Work
These are more personal - but let's just say the overall biggie is to bring glory to God in everything I do - not separate it from the rest of life.

8. Blog
Interact with other bloggers more consistently.

Write more wedding advice.

There are a few other things I'd like to blog about more, but we'll see. I have so many ideas running through my head all of the time - I need to PLAN them out better.

Get ahead on my blog posts - schedule more of them.

Don't stress out about it. Keep it fun.

Well that's it for the ones that I'm sharing. Did you write about your goals for this year? If so, please do share with me. I'd love to see them. :)

Happy New Year!
