I need YOUR help! Book suggestions!
Next week will be an awesome week.
I'm turning 24 on the 17th. And then I'm going to North Myrtle Beach for our annual family vacation. This is the one time a year that I get to see my cousins/aunts/uncles from Michigan and South Carolina and it is a BLAST.
So, of course, I'm going to need some beach reads.
That's where you come in.
Suggestions????
Just to give you an idea of some books I have loved, last year at the beach I devoured The Hunger Games series. I had just finished reading Harry Potter for the first time.
I love classic literature, especially Jane Austen. All of those books that I had to read in high school/college? Most people didn't like them. But I did. A lot.
(With the exception of Heart of Darkness. Hate. That. Book.)
I love historical fiction and just finished reading The Mark of the Lion series by Francine Rivers and Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran.
I love Christian fiction (that isn't super cheesy, haha). One of my favorites is Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers.
And non-fiction suggestions are welcome, too!
Oh, by the way, I'm gonna go ahead and say "no, thank you" to 50 Shades of Grey. :)

If you enjoyed the Hunger Games, try the first two books in the Divergent series by Veronica Roth -- Divergent and Insurgent. The only problem with these is that the last book isn't out yet. Another series that I'm really into is the Graveyard Queen by Amanda Stevens, although it's a little supernatural and definitely not for everybody. Do you have a Goodreads account? It's a great way to track what you've read, what your friends are reading, and get suggestions based on the ratings you give books. Obviously I'm really into reading. :) Have a fun beach trip!!
ReplyDeleteI am reading Clayton Kershaw's book Arise: Live Out Your Faith and Dreams on Whatever Field You Find Yourself. It's a really good book :)
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't read "Kisses from Katie" by Katie Davis, I highly recommend it for a good Christian, nonfiction read. I also love historical fiction. I really liked the Savannah Quartet by Eugenia Price. The first one in that series is called "Savannah." Another historical fiction series I recently read is The Poisoner Mysteries by Sara Poole. The first one is called "Poison." Although, I haven't read the last one in the series yet because the library doesn't have it. :( Have fun at the beach and happy reading!

ReplyDeleteAlso, I would like to recommend the O'Malley Chronicles by Dee Henderson (I loved all 6 of them). I really think you'd like the Thursday Next series I recommended on Facebook. You have to love a good story where characters go in and out of classic literature (such as Jane Eyre, etc.). It's a little weird at first, but I think you'd love it.
ReplyDeleteThis might not be something you are interested in, but Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is a very amazing and true story. It's a memoir about a WWII soldier in the Pacific amphitheater....basically his plane gets shot down, he's adrift for like 40+ days with no food or water, and then becomes a POW in Japan for over two years. Eventually he finds God. It's a very moving and deep book that you won't forget about for a very very long time.
ReplyDeleteIf you like Christian fiction I would highly recommend anything by Cindy Woodsmall. She writes fiction about Amish people and they are so good! It isn't cheesy and it isn't all about love, there are deeper issues running through the stories as well. She did actual research with actual Amish people so there is also a cultural element. Sisters of the Quilt is my favorite, it is a trilogy. Her Ada's House series is great too, but Sisters is my suggestion. Have fun at the beach :)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the Mark of the Lion series and Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran as well! I totally suggest reading the rest of her books too! They are just as good as that one.
ReplyDeleteHa I started the post and thought hey what about "The Mark of the Lion" Series I just finished those... then I read a few more line! Ha Great minds think alike? I am a big fan of the O'Malley series that Carrie suggested and I am a big fan of Lizz Curtis Higgs. I just finished "Hear My Candle", and "Mine is The Night". She has another series also that I have read and reread as well! Have fun at the beach girl!
ReplyDeleteI just read "The Vow." The book is WAY better than the movie, and they have an amazing testimony which the movie doesn't show at all. I am currently reading "Confessions of a Military Wife." It is really funny! If you have a Kindle/Amazon account, it's one of the $3.99 or less books this month!

ReplyDeleteOk I thought I left another comment but I don't see it. Anyway, "The Vow" is very good! I had seen the movie but didn't read the book until recently. I had no idea what an amazing Christian testimony they had b/c the movie doesn't show it at all. Also, I am currently reading "Confessions of a Military Wife" and it is very funny! ReplyDeleteLast year I read ALL of the O'Malley Series and it was amazing! LOVE ALL of them! Also, I know its older but Jeannette Oke is good. I read a lot of 'Amish' christian fiction which is good. Have you ever read any Nicholas Evans? I really like his stuff - The Horse Whisperer, The Loop, The Smoke Jumper, The Divide and the brave.

I saw the movie the 'horse whisperer' and was really really impressed. Instead of the mother leaving her husband, she actually did the right thing1 Maybe Hollywood fell asleep on the job and this got through? The book is actually a lot less moral and tragic... so I'd stick to the movie, at least this time.

ReplyDeleteThe Tea Rose is the first of a trilogy by Jennifer Donnelley. Amazing historical fiction, although not Christian per se. It is a very long book, spans the course of decades and is my favorite book ever.

ReplyDeleteBrideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh is supposed to be the best book of the 20th Century. It is similar to the style of Downton Abbey and Jane Austin's books.
As for Christian fiction, have you read C.S. Lewis' space trilogy? I DO NOT like science fiction, but this is my favorite book/series!!! Amazing! I cannot think of a set of books (other than the Bible, duh) that gives more glory to God in a reading in addition to practical implementations of the Christian life and thought! LOVE IT!!!
